Okay, here's the topic for the rest of this week, and I'm paraphrasing the question that I showed you in the handout on literary criticism of Oedipus because I left my copy at school (must have been fate). Now that you all obviously have a firm grip on hubris and ate', to what extent do you think our lives are governed by our heredity, our environment, chemical makeup, family heritage, fate, etc. As I said, this is a paraphrase. Use the questions that I directed you to in the handout.
Oh, by the way, I'm not sure I agree that Catherine is an example of hubris. I actually think Heathcliff might be a better example because hubris represents a person's belief that he can act independently of "the gods" and mold the world to conform to his own desires - the ultimate form of overweening pride. It goes beyond narcissism to almost seeing the self as being so powerful that one no longer has to submit to laws of nature (the gods).
Can't wait to hear what you have to say about free will, heredity, etc. This ought to be good.........
